Don't add you the loss of your Laptop to this summers memories

As a reminder as summer approaches: as you travel to the cottage or elsewhere on vacation with the laptop please take precautions against loss.

As I found out recently many home/business policies insure your laptop against theft and fire but they require proof of ownership and providing your insurance carrier with up-to-date information about your laptop computer.

If you don't do this you may end up holding the bag if you lose your laptop in your travels.

The fine print in some insurance policies states that the policy only covers you if you have informed the company of the existence of the machine before you report the loss.

You will need a police report and proof that you owned the laptop before you can submit the report to the insurance company.

It isn't hard to prove ownership if you know what the insurers are looking for.

The police in most cases require a photo of the bottom of the laptop (serial number, make and model number, date of manufacture as well as operating system proof of purchase).

Once you have the proof, when you transport your laptop, keep the laptop in a bag that is out of sight (out of direct view of possible thieves - the trunk is great for this if you have room in it).

Laptops are made to be transported carefully but you should also consider the data in the machine.

Before you travel it is a good idea to buy a USB flash memory stick (you can get most with an 8 Gigabyte or larger capacity for less then $100).

It is a good idea to back up your documents and emails onto the flash memory stick just to make sure that if you are the victim of theft, or if your laptop does get damaged, you still have your data.
